8 Decisions I Made In My Pregnancy & Parenting That Will Infuriate The Internet
As parents, we are constantly bombarded with unsolicited opinions. From the moment I announced my second pregnancy on social media, I was inundated with “helpful” followers telling me what I should and shouldn’t do with my body and my baby. Although most of these people are truly well-intentioned, I’ve noticed that no matter what I do - I can’t make everyone happy.
I’m not a doctor and am in no way offering medical advice, but I do listen to my doctor. She and I made the best decisions for my health, baby’s health, and my family’s needs.
Here are some controversial pregnancy and parenting decisions I made that truly infuriate the internet:
1. I had a scheduled c-section.
I’ve had one before for a breeched baby. I opted for another, but it turns out that it ended up being medically necessary due to kidney problems.
2. I’m not breastfeeding.
I have medical issues that make also make this difficult. My first child, Harrison, was admitted for near starvation when our nurses didn’t tell us anything about breastfeeding. It was traumatizing and required we spend three days of the first week of his life in the ER while I was recovering from a c-section. Also, it’s super hard for most moms and my pregnancy was miserable enough as is.
3. I’m eating what I want when I want.
Food dyes, sugar, processed fast food… you name it. I’m also balancing it with healthy decisions when possible.
4. We opted for no eye cream at birth.
We did this with Harrison and my newborn Bailey. The risk of infection is tiny, and I felt it helped me bond with my newborn better because they could see more clearly than with goo all in their eyes.
5. We didn’t share the due date or c-section date.
I wanted it to be a fun surprise since not much was fun during my pregnancy!
6. We’ll be taking her out into the world pretty quickly.
I’ve was on bed rest for about 6 months. I’d barely left my home, and my family is so excited to be able to do things together again. Of course, we won’t be handing her off to strangers or exposing her to super germ-y places.
7. I’m taking medication.
I don’t love this one, but with all the health problems and severe pain, it’s safer for me to take medications than to put stress on my baby from severe pain. All natural remedies didn’t work for me. Fortunately, baby is developing perfectly!
8. We don’t listen to strangers on the internet.
Our first kid has been the easiest most incredible kid EVER. Our daughter may be different, but we enjoy figuring things out on our own. We can’t please millions of people online— so we are doing what is best for our family. If we ever want tips or advice... we’d ask. 💕
At the end of the day, I know I’m making the best decisions for my family. What “controversial” parenting and pregnancy decision have you made? Let me know in the comments!
