How To Get Comfortable Painting Furniture Fun Colors (When You Always Use Neutrals)

If you saw my recent posts, you know that I asked my husband to pick out a color for a flip. Out of all of my beautiful, safe neutrals - he picked RED. I don’t mean muted red, I mean RED RED. (Check out the post here!)

After putting it off for a few days, I finally did it. And guess what?

I hated it.

Did it look HORRIBLE? I don’t know - you can be the judge of that (final reveal linked here!). I definitely wouldn’t consider myself an “always white paint” kind of flipper, but I love my muted neutrals.

HOWEVER.

I *am* capable of changing things up. And if you want to do the same, this post is for you!

There are a few ways to prepare for using fun colors. First, I would start with something small. You might love a small accent table painted something bold, but an entire dresser might be too much.

Second, I would plan it out ahead of time! When I’m planning a flip and get stuck (or when I’m trying something out of my comfort zone!), I draw out my plan. I use photopea.com, Canva, or Instagram stories. TIP - if you already have the paint color you want, take a photo of it and use the “dropper” tool to select that exact color when mocking something up. (see my post on how to do that here!)

Next, my biggest tip is to start using bold colors as accents. You can see in the photos that I LOVE using color while still letting stained pieces pop through. This is a great way to commit to color without FULLY committing to color.

And finally, if it doesn’t work, don’t panic! Not liking a color isn’t reflective of you as a flipper or an artist. I have flips I don’t LOVE. I either sell them or - in the case of the red bench - I donate them to local teachers! Classrooms can always use a pop of color.

Still feeling uneasy about using fun colors? Submit your piece that needs flipping to my Mock-Up Monday posts! I select three pieces every Monday and show you how I would flip them (include in the notes that you want to try a fun color and I’ll try to incorporate that!). You can submit pictures via direct message to my Instagram.

If you’re feeling TOTALLY lost on painting and flipping, don’t forget to check out my Flip It! eCourse! You can also join my free Facebook Flip It! group and post your pictures for advice.
