Furniture flipping can be a really lucrative hobby, especially if you’re like me and you find most of your furniture for free. Before you start flipping, you’ll need to invest in a few items to get you started. I’ve made a list of the 5 essential tools you need to start your DIY journey.

1. Orbital Sander

This is arguably the best investment you can make as a furniture flipper. I recommend sanding every project before painting or staining. An orbital sander will save you SO much time. Be sure you order plenty of extra sanding discs because they will wear down quickly.

2. Face Mask

Wearing a protective mask while sanding, spray painting, and using chemicals is recommended to help keep you safe. I use this RZ face mask for all of my projects.

3. Paint Sprayer

A paint sprayer isn’t absolutely necessary, but it will save you a lot of stress and time. Once you learn how to use one, it makes for fast and even paint coverage. If you’re painting inside or in a garage, consider purchasing a spray tent. If you can’t use a paint sprayer, I recommend Zibra brushes for hand painting (using code MAGGIE10 will save you 10%!).

4. Quality Paint

Use code MAGGIE10 for 10% off your purchase!

When I first started flipping furniture I looked for ways to cut costs, and one of those ways was by purchasing cheap paint. I quickly learned that this was a BIG mistake. Lower quality paint requires more coats, chips easier, and can have a cheaper look to it. Nowadays, I only use the Melange brand for my projects. I recommend the “ONE” line because the paint has a built in sealant.

5. Wood Filler

If you want to save money, you should look for furniture that is free or extremely low cost. This means the pieces you get are often ones that have been given up on by other people and might be damaged. Luckily, most furniture repairs are minor and can be fixed with wood filler.

These supplies will get you started, but you may want some other items… especially as you improve and expand. Here’s a link to ALL of the tools I recommend for your starter kit.
